Why Use This Tool

What is Strikethrough Text?

Strikethrough text is created using a Unicode combining character — specifically U+0336 (COMBINING LONG STROKE OVERLAY). This invisible character is inserted after each letter and instructs your device's text renderer to draw a horizontal line through it. The result looks like c̶r̶o̶s̶s̶e̶d̶-̶o̶u̶t̶ text but is made entirely of regular Unicode characters you can copy, paste, and type anywhere, just like normal text.

Because the strikethrough is baked into the characters rather than applied by an app's formatting engine, it works on every platform that displays Unicode — which is essentially everything: iOS, Android, Windows, Mac, and the web. No special app support is required. If the platform shows text, it shows your strikethrough text. This makes it fundamentally different from Markdown strikethrough (~~text~~), which only works in apps that render Markdown syntax.

Platform Compatibility

  • WhatsApp
  • Discord
  • Twitter / X
  • Instagram
  • Facebook
  • Telegram
  • Reddit
  • LinkedIn(partial)
  • SMS

Social media and messaging:Use strikethrough on Discord server names, WhatsApp status messages, Twitter/X posts, Instagram bios, and Facebook comments. Most of these platforms don't have a native strikethrough button, but Unicode strikethrough works because the line is baked into the characters themselves — not dependent on any app's formatting engine.

Gaming and usernames: Crossed-out text is popular for gaming profiles on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation, Twitch, and Discord. It makes usernames stand out in chat and leaderboards. Since the effect is Unicode-based, it works in any text field that accepts characters — including in-game chat on most modern games.

Showing corrections and humor:Writers use strikethrough to show edits transparently — crossing out the wrong word while leaving it visible, then writing the correction. It's also widely used for sarcastic humor online: "I'm s̶o̶ ̶h̶a̶p̶p̶y̶ doing fine." The crossed-out text adds a layer of meaning that plain text can't convey.

Frequently Asked Questions

This tool adds a Unicode combining character (U+0336) after each letter. This tells the rendering engine to draw a horizontal line through the character. Unlike bold or italic generators that swap characters for different Unicode codepoints, strikethrough uses an overlay that layers on top of existing characters.
Strikethrough text works on WhatsApp, Twitter/X, Instagram, Discord, Telegram, Facebook, Reddit, and most apps that support Unicode. Because it uses a combining overlay rather than alternate character sets, it has wider compatibility than most other text effects. Even platforms with limited Unicode support usually render the crossed-out line correctly.
Yes — the strikethrough overlay is applied to every character including letters, numbers, spaces, and symbols. Unlike bold or italic Unicode which only covers Latin letters, the combining stroke character (U+0336) can be layered onto any Unicode character. This means your entire message gets the crossed-out look, regardless of language or character type.
There is no built-in undo because the strikethrough characters are baked into the text as combining overlays. To get plain text back, retype it or paste from your original source. If you paste already-strikethrough text into the input, the tool detects the existing overlays and won't double-apply them.
Markdown strikethrough (~~text~~) only works in apps that render Markdown, like GitHub, Reddit, or Slack. Unicode strikethrough created by this tool uses invisible combining characters that display as a line through your text everywhere — including platforms with zero Markdown support like WhatsApp, Instagram bios, and SMS.
Yes — Discord fully supports Unicode combining characters in messages, usernames, and status text. The strikethrough from this tool works in DMs, server channels, and your profile status. Note that Discord also has its own ~~Markdown~~ strikethrough for message body text, but that only works in the message content box — not in usernames, server nicknames, or status fields, where Unicode strikethrough is your only option.
The crossed-out line is rendered by a Unicode combining character (U+0336) that layers over each letter. Different operating systems, system fonts, and apps position this overlay at slightly different heights or thicknesses. On iOS and most Android devices it renders consistently, but some older Android fonts or apps with custom text engines may place the line slightly higher or lower than expected. The text remains fully readable and pasteable everywhere — the variation is purely cosmetic.
